Item Description
This anti-slavery medal, the earliest American issued abolitionist medal known to us, was produced during the 1838 congressional elections. 1-1/8" in very pleasing copper tone with smoothing of the details of the body of the kneeling female figure in chains, but much less wear than typical and also without the typical darkening of the metal.  Obverse text " 1838 Am I Not A Woman & A Sister".  Reverse has only slight wear on the wreath leaves and the "38" of "1838" is faint as struck, but visible. The dies were cut by Edward Hulseman. VF.
