Item Description
.75" enamel on brass with horizontal bar pin on back plus union mark. Front shows logo with woman holding baby shaking the hand of Liberty. Tiny text on panel between them reads " The Eight Hour Day/A Living Wage/To Guard The Home/1903". Both working class and more well off women formed this group to support efforts of women to organize unions and end sweatshop conditions. The group came into existence at the 1903 AF of L convention and two years were spent trying to strengthen ties with AF of L leadership, who generally ignored the group. When WTUL decided to hold their own convention in 1905, Samuel Gompers was furious and refused to attend. They did succeed in pushing the AL of L towards a pro-suffrage position and brought the union organization of women to a new high.
Slight luster loss. Our first. VF.
