Item Description
1.25" to 2.75". Here are three both college and professional historic football buttons. Group begins w/1.25" oval designed as a figural football and picturing a milk bottle w/"Member 'Gus' Dorais Football Squad" text. Button dates to his years (1925-1942) coaching the University of Detroit.  He followed that position as head coach of the Detroit Lions 1943-1947. We estimate this button to be from the 1930s and curl has name of maker Parisian. Dorais' relationship w/Rockne goes back to his college years where he started four seasons at quarter back for Notre Dame. In his senior year of 1913 he became part of college football history. The previous summer Dorais and Rockne practice passing a maneuver legal since 1906 but little used. Notre Dame traveled to West Point w/only 18 players to face a heavily favored Army on Nov. 1, 1913. Dorais completed 14 of 17 passes including at the time a 40 yard pass to Rockne that was the longest ever completed to that date. Notre Dame pulled away from a confused Army team for a 35-13 victory that changed the landscape of college football and lifted the Irish from obscurity. Second button in the group names "Edward Longhi - 1939 - Notre Dame." Longhi played for Notre Dame 1935-1938 but the most interesting aspect of this button is the 1939 date as that was when he was drafted in the 17th round to join the 1939 Pittsburgh Steelers. Perhaps the players under consideration that year were each given such a button. Ribbons show lt. dust soiling, but the 2-3/8" button remains Mint. Last is 2.75" figural football button w/"Touchdown Club Washington, D.C. - 1946 - 11th Annual Banquet" text. This Club was founded by Arthur "Dutch" Bergman, a former standout half back at Notre Dame who then became head coach at Catholic University and later the Washington Redskins. He bought a charter in 1935 for $2 to establish this club. They presented their annual "Timmie Awards" to players at the high school, college and professional levels. Pro athletes, Hollywood celebrities and politicians all attended the Touchdown Club's dinner and Sports Illustrated referred to the event as "The Grandaddy Of All Sports Banquets." NM displaying Mint. Three historic football buttons.  Paul Muchinsky Collection.
