Item Description
This 2-1/8" button displays beautifully with deep red background color and full gloss although the center of the button has been pushed in to a degree that the center area will not 'pop-out'. Reverse has somewhat heavier than usual oxidation but nothing severe. Left and right is text "Wichita Aug. 13 To 26". Center text is "Player/1937/National/Semi-Pro/Baseball/Congress." This event was the creation of Wichita sporting goods salesman Hap Dumont. The first "National Baseball Congress World Series" was played in 1935. A success from the beginning, this button was used for the event just two years later. In 1937 the championship team were the "Eason Oilers" from Enid, Oklahoma with the runners up the "Bona Allens" from Buford, Georgia. Two years before this button Dumont paid Satchel Paige $1000 to bring his touring Bismarck Churchills from North Dakota to play. Paige struck out 60 batters and won four games. Overall VG but displaying at least NM. Only example we've seen. Paul Muchinsky Collection.
