Item Description
This 1.25" button, no maker's name, was created for use on the date it carries. In full it reads" I Helped Build The Stadium/Paid To Date/Oct. 18,/1924." The button is in University of Illinois colors, blue on orange. Reverse has normal oxidation and front outer edge has light traces of age stain. Full gloss and overall Fine. The button's text is a reference to $1.7 million raised by more than 200,000 students, alumni, and friends of the University. The stadium opened Nov. 23, 1923 with an Illinois homecoming victory over Chicago. However, the stadium was officially dedicated on the date this button specifies: Oct. 18, 1924. Illinois defeated Michigan for a 39-14 Homecoming victory in a game legendary coach Amos Alonzo Stagg called "the most spectacular single handed performance ever delivered in a major game". Stagg was referring to Harold E. (Red) Grange (see next item) who scored six touchdowns in the single greatest performance in Memorial Stadium history. In the first 12 minutes of the game, Grange ran for a total of 265 yards and scored four touchdowns against a team that had not lost in its last 20 games. His overall statistics for the game were amazing. This historic college football button is the only example we've encountered in 50 years.
