Item Description
Extensive and well designed parts for complete chess set. 1950s. Prototype consists of two separate chessboard pieces, designed like fields w/players sides having stand-up cardboard castles for red or blue players. These pieces are constructed out of stiff board w/applied sheets of paper w/mixed media original art. Chessboard has some mild rippling to surface paper from glue, but is o/w clean and Exc. Comes w/complete complement of individually created, illustrated original art, colored, cut out and assembled playing pieces, depicting knights on horseback w/swords and lances, armored footmen w/crossbows, swords and shields, maces, axes, etc., featuring a variety of poses. Each double-sided piece is constructed out of stiff paper and has attached stiff paper stands. These are all extremely well-made w/much detail. Exc. Comes w/original generic cardboard box w/divider for separating playing pieces. Box shows obvious and heavy wear and is Good/VG. Lot also comes w/glossy 5x7" photo showing the chessboard and pieces set up w/"Created By Sam Gold And Associates" ruler in front. Typed slip of paper notes that one player's pieces would represent Robin Hood and his Merry Men while the player opposite would play w/pieces representing "Castle People" including the Sheriff of Nottingham, Prince John, etc. From the amount of detail put into this prototype, it is clearly evident a great deal of time and effort went into producing this chess set.
