Item Description
Lot of 18 handwritten letters, all from one Union Civil War soldier and dated from July 1863 to Sept. 1864. All either were written by (or pertain to) Union soldier Cleavland M. Kinney, w/16 addressed to his mother and one to his sister. Another letter addressed to Kinney's mother from the Adjutant General's office confirms Kinney's enlistment that he is stationed in Tennessee. Kinney was from Illinois and was Corporal under Captain Timothy Rose. He served in the 16th Army Corps, first in Company A of the 4th Battalion Pioneers - these special units were forward engineer companies - and some letters mention bridge-building, camp life including mention of "Plenty To Eat And That As Good (And Better) Than Soldiers Have A Right To Expect" including potatoes and eggs. One letter mentions General Grant and some of his injured soldiers, etc. In 1864 Kinney was transferred to Brigade Headquarters where he served as an ambulance driver. Letters are of typical reassuring nature, mentioning that he is doing well and his hopes for an end to the war. Letters also have mention of his thoughts about whether he would reenlist or not. Most letters are two-sided and most are at least three 4-7/8x7.75" pages long. Back of one letter has printed image of "Battle Of Fair Oaks - June 1 1862." As far as we can tell, Kinney served in an engineer capacity and did not actually participate in any battles. Letters come w/eight small hand-addressed envelopes. Expected scattered handling wear and aging w/a few letters having some staining and margin wear. Fine to VF overall. Great lot offering insight into the mind of a Civil War soldier.
