Item Description
This is one of the two earliest character premium badges, offered Jan. 1900 through Street & Smith "Tip Top Weekly" publication. 2-3/8" long badge w/correct "Tip-Top League" top hanger. Badge was available for two coupons and 10¢ or 20¢ (or the equivalent in stamps) if the person ordering was a member (reader) but if not, the cost was 50¢. Back has Whitehead & Hoag maker name. Reverse bar pin has some soldering as produced. Front of badge has five cross-like segments w/center picturing Merriwell surrounded by "True As Steel - Frank Merriwell" text. Some lt. aging and luster wear, but majority of piece retains bright gold luster. VF overall. Historic and very scarce. Robert M. Overstreet Collection.
