Item Description
1-1/8" U.S. copper penny with front date of 1842. Front has been very deeply counterstamped with "Vote The Land" in an arch above "Free". Stamping caused a very slight upward bend to the lower portion of the copper. Reverse has smoothing of details including the word "One" and the first three letters of "States" along with portions of the wreath that surrounds "One Cent". The front strike is extremely bold. Overall VF. The traditional attribution for this item by DeWitt and others is as a pro-Martin Van Buren 1848 Free Soil Party issue promoting the idea that any new state joining the Union could not allow slavery. Research by David Bowers, based on a census of the dates on the known examples, strongly suggests the likely issuer as the National Reform Association founded in NYC in 1844 by George Henry Evans a radical activist opposed to capitalist speculators who bought up most of the desirable frontier lands to the disadvantage of the average workingman/potential farmer. The vast majority of the specimens (95%) known are dated 1844 or earlier and were likely issued after the NRA convention in the Spring of 1844. Either way, a great political issue token. Scarce.
