Item Description
4.25x5.25" thin card stock handbill advertising a "Funeral Notice" for the "Hippie" on October 6, 1967 at Buena Vista Park in San Francisco. Additional text reads "In The Haight Ashbury District Of This City, Hippie, Devoted Son Of Mass Media" and "Friends Are Invited To Attend Services Beginning At Sunrise." Six tiny pin point dots of light brown toning at right, age toning at edges most notably along right side and minor corner wear. Fine. Members of the Diggers, the noted street-theater anarchists responsible for starting a free store and free health clinic in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood, along w/longtime area resident and fixture Marry Ellen Kasper organized the event in hopes of stopping the mainstream media attention on the area. The freewheeling mock funeral featured a coffin filled w/Hippie trappings including underground newspapers, flowers, beard trimmings and locks of long hair. The coffin was paraded by the Diggers from the park through the neighborhood staging a 'Kneel-In' at the corner of Haight and Ashbury. "We Wanted To Signal That This Was The End Of It, To Stay Where You Are, Bring The Revolution To Where You Live And Don't Come Here Because It's Over And Done With" Kasper stated later reflecting on the events origins. A rare and historic artifact from the center of the cultural revolution. The first we've offered in 50 years.
