Item Description
15/16" (25mm) made of copper. Listed by Dewey Albert as WI-22 (Washington Inaugural) in his text 'Record Of American Uniform And Historical Buttons' where he assigned its rarity an R-6 meaning 3-5 specimens known. The present example is excavated having very minimal metal deterioration. The color is charcoal black but the design has a white gold wash over the entire strongly struck incised design area making the stylized "GW" and liberty cap motif stand out distinctly. The original shank has been professionally re-attached by a laser weld. This process does not use solder so the only evidence of re-attachment are a few tiny brighter dots of copper color at the base of shank where it joins the button. Overall Fine. Considered among the most coveted Washington inaugural buttons for its design elements and extreme rarity. This is the first we have been privileged to offer in our 51 years and the only other example we have seen publicly offered sold recently in excess of $37,000 at a South-Central auction house. The opportunity to obtain this important historical American button cannot be overstated. Certain to become the centerpiece of the new owner's collection and a piece that will remain a coveted artifact of the beginnings of the great American Republic for generations to come.
