Item Description
Listed as DeWitt-Sullivan (Paine) 1796-4. 28mm (1-1/16") copper, although DeWitt lists as 31mm. From a small number of medalets imported from England satarizing various political events of the day, such as advocates of Republican ideals. At the time, Paine was a refugee in France. Obverse depicts 4 men dancing around a pole topped by Paine's head, beneath the slogan "Tree Of Liberty." Reverse shows heart design on the palm of an open hand with "James" below and "Honour" above. Side edge is incised "Spence Dealer In Coins London." Scarce and Exc.
