Item Description
1.25" has no back paper or maker's name as typical for most real photo (no dot screen) buttons.  Shows illustration of dead young woman with her lower body covered by a coat, perhaps a fireman's as there are a pair of stripes around one sleeve. On the water covered floor, barely seen without magnification, by her outstretched arm is a rectangle inscribed "Pay Envelope". A sign on the wall above her body reads "Operators/Wanted/Inquire Ninth/Floor". The factory was on floors 8-9-10 of the Asch Building in Greenwich Village. The fire began in a scrap bin on the 8th floor. Doors to exits and stairwells were locked to prevent employee breaks and theft. The deaths of 146 garment workers, mostly Italian and Jewish recent immigrant women, made it the deadliest industrial disaster in NYC's history. The fire led to improved safety regulations and spurred the growth of the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union. First seen. NM displaying Mint. Ted Watts Collection.
