Item Description
Lot of 16 artboards, each approx. 13.75x19.75" and w/pen and ink original art by Bud Sagendorf (1915-1994), the artist most closely associated w/Popeye after his creator E.C. Segar, Sagendorf served as writer and artist for Dell's, Gold Key's and King Comic's "Popeye" comics, published 1948-1967 and assumed command of the "Thimble Theatre" comic strip in 1959. Lot present complete 16-page "Map Back" story that was published by Dell in "Popeye" #1 (the second of three stories in that issue) in Feb.-April, 1948. This art is from Sagendorf's first year working on the "Popeye" comic book. Story deals w/Swee'Pea getting map to King Blozo's jewels drawn on his back in invisible ink by two "Villainous Villains" who need a place to stash the map for a few months. They later track down Swee'Pea and try to access the map, w/Popeye running interference. An emissary of King Blozo arrives in a crate and shows Popeye and Swee'Pea a photo of the two men he's looking for. Swee'Pea recognizes the two and growls when he sees a picture. Popeye later sics Swee'Pea on them before they reveal why they need Swee'Pea, Great humorous content throughout. Popeye appears in total of 58 panels while Swee'Pea appears in 38. Artboards have some scattered margin aging and a few paste-over text strips here and there. Most notable is paste-over on first page, changing title adjectives. Artboards are Fine/VF overall but art remains clean and Exc. w/a few blue pencil editorial notations. Great example of Popeye art from Sagendorf's first year on the comic, let alone the very first issue.  Comes w/reading copy of the comic book this art was produced for. Also comes w/paper stat for first page as well as three smaller paper/acetate stats for "Popeye" #10. Scarce as a complete story from the first issue.
