Item Description
14.5x18.75" original unmarked chipboard slipcase contains amazing 14.5x18.25" clothbound hardcover published by The Hyperion Press in 1941. Slipcase shows obvious wear w/tears/chips, two clear tape repairs at upper edges and moderate corner wear w/edge pieces missing. Good/VG. Book is a signed and numbered limited edition, being extremely low #2 of 1,000 printed and has been signed on page opposite title page in black ink "To Alexander Duetsch With Great Admiration From Your Fellow Worker On This Book - Hirschfeld." Hirschfeld has also added the date, "Nov. 24th, 1941." Book opens w/text and Hirschfeld illustrations and then progresses to titled and tipped-in bw and color illustrations by Hirschfeld depicting "Ebony Sister" (African-American nun), "Plastered" (featuring drunk woman being escorted by policeman), "Reefer Man" (depiction of African-American gentleman w/joint in hand), "Lindy Hop" (depiction of African-American couple jitterbugging), "Solid Sender" (depiction of African-American drummer), "Apollo Corine" (depicting female showgirl in revealing tuxedo and top hat), "Jam Session" (depicting jazz band playing), "Sharpy Family" (depicting dandy-looking African-American family out for a stroll) as seen on book cover, "Cocoa Venus" (depicting topless African-American woman reclining in bed), as well as several Bali-related sketches. Missing plate No. 15, "A Dinner." Text was by William Saroyan. Book shows lt. wear along spine which shows some aging. Cover is Fine/VF overall. Pages are clean and Exc. Rare and desirable book further enhanced by low number and personal inscription from legendary illustrator Al Hirschfeld. Additional photos online.
