Item Description
Willard Mullin (1902-1978) was a sports cartoonist known for his creation of the Brooklyn Dodgers mascot the Brooklyn Bum. Working for the "New York World-Telegram" newspaper and "The Sporting News," he won the National Cartoonist Society Reuben Award in 1954 and also won their Sports Cartoon Award every year 1957-1962 and again in 1964-1965. Offered here is 16x22" artboard w/pen and ink original art showing New York Yankees player running (seen in six different poses) and recalling the Yankees' 1949-1953 AL Championship streak, which was broken in 1954 (the year this art was created) by the Cleveland Indians. Editorial notations at bottom margin in pencil and blue grease pencil. Art has some glue staining to hand-lettered captions and inked brushstrokes at top. Upper left margin has been trimmed, not affecting art. Scattered dust soiling and lt. even aging. Lower left has 3.25" corner crease. Artboard is Fine overall while art remains clean and VF overall. Great piece of Mullin art for Yankees fans.
