Item Description
28.25x40.5" for original release of the 1915 Civil War drama directed by Cecil B. DeMille and starring Blanche Sweet, James Neill and Page Peters. Wonderful stone lithography by Cooke & Josten features Union soldier (played by House Peters) w/his Southern sweetheart (played by Blanche Sweet) as stereotypical elderly African-American woman looks on. Caption reads "Ned Urges Agatha Not To Let The War Separate Them." Originally folded, poster has been linen-mounted and has had extensive restoration performed by a professional, so that much blends well. Restoration includes replaced 2.5x13.5" top left corner (w/color touch-ups to Jesse L. Lasky name), 8x8.5" bottom left corner, 1.5x7" top right corner (mostly margin), 2.25x8" bottom right corner as well as 5x12" tapered V-shaped section w/jagged edges area above "Jesse L. Lasky Feature Play Company" at center left and running into Sweet's arm w/nearly mirrored 5x11.5" area restored at center right (extending in to Peters' arm). Fold lines have had some color touch-ups. Margin wear and all over margin restoration has partially obscured lithographer's name. Prior to restoration and linen-mounting, poster was in Poor condition, but as linen-mounted, main image could be matted and framed for a Fine/VF display. Rare early poster.
