Item Description
22x28" oversized cardboard poster by "Globe Poster-Baltimore" advertising a concert "Thurs. March 8" at "W. C. Taylor High School Warrenton, VA." Text at top of design boldly states "The James Brown Show" and additional acts include "Yvonne Fair," "Baby Lloyd" and "Six Beautiful Dancing Girls The Brownies." A youthful image of Brown emerging from the oversized "James Brown" text all set on a background of bright dayglo orange. Of note are: four short margin tears; a 2" vertical tear repaired on reverse w/archival tape at bottom affecting the second 'R" in "Orchestra"; age toning along r/l and bottom margins; scattered creases that amount to moderate handling wear and corner tip/area wear including light creases. Fine. Bright fresh colors and a world class design even by the lofty standards of Globe Posters. Only 60 miles outside of Washington D.C., W. C. Taylor High was an all African American school built during the Jim Crow era that did not desegregate until 1969. The 1960 census data lists Warrenton, VA w/a population of just over 6,000 and Fauquire County at just over 24,000. Given Brown's intense touring schedule it's unlikely that this jumbo window card was distributed widely, and this is the only example known to us. This poster captures Brown and his band in front of their primary audience at the height of their artistry a mere five months before "Live At The Apollo" would be recorded.
