Item Description
Vintage 6.5x8.5" photo shows the Curtiss Condor plane emblazoned w/"Amoco" on the side that noted aviation pioneer Clarence Chamberlin (1893-1976) barnstormed the US in the later part of the 1930s, offering rides to the public, the price depending the style of flight requested. Chamberlin had achieved fame some ten years prior as Charles Lindbergh's rival for the Orteig Prize, a $25,000 reward to the first aviator(s) to fly non-stop from New York City to Paris. Unfortunately due to some legal issues and bad weather, Chamberlin took off on his journey after Lindbergh, who ultimately claimed the prize. Despite being the second man to pilot a fixed-wing aircraft across the Atlantic Ocean, from New York to the European mainland, Chamberlin set a record as the first transatlantic crossing w/a passenger. Photo has been signed in blue ink "To Jerry Cohen - With Best Wishes - Clarence D Chamberlin," adding a "'38" date. Photo is evenly aged and has some handling wear. including some creases and small line indents to inscription (which remains totally legible). Upper right corner has creases and .25" and .5" edge tears. Fine overall w/VF inscription/signature. Comes with Hake's COA and JSA LOA.
