Item Description
13x23" thin cardboard sign features nice portrait image at right of noted early cartoonist T.A. Dorgan, who signed his work "Tad." Pocket tin of "Patterson's Tuxedo Tobacco" at left. c. 1910. Text includes "T. A. Dorgan, The Famous 'Tad,' Originator Of The 'Daffydils,' Says: Tuxedo Can't Be Equaled In Soothing, Refreshing Qualities. It's Mildness Insures A Pleasant Smoke, It's Coolness Removes All Tongue Bite" with facsimile signature "T. A. Dorgan". Sign has registration marks around sides, likely a printer's proof w/additional color notations at bottom. Corner tip wear, more moderate at upper right, results in corner foxing. VF overall. Besides Daffydils, Tad is also known for his cartoon panel "Indoor Sports" and the many words and expressions he added to modern language. Striking graphics and probably one of the first examples of a product which had an endorsement by a cartoonist. See cartoon buttons, #1163.
