Item Description
29.25x40" poster features striking artwork by Joseph Pennell, showing German biplanes flying over a devastated New York City, which lays in ruins. The most potent image is that of the destroyed Statue of Liberty, whose severed head lays in the waters, while a U-Boat can be seen patrolling not far off. Liberty's raised arm that once held aloft the torch of freedom rests on the rubble at her feet. Bottom features quote from Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, reading in part "That Liberty Shall Not Perish From The Earth" followed by "Buy Liberty Bonds - Fourth Liberty Loan." Poster has been linen-mounted and has had extensive margin restorations, as margins have been completely repainted/replaced (and some text at bottom has been repainted). Poster shows all over handling wear but main image area has only had some restoration at top corners. VG overall.
