The railroad shopmen's strike was the largest industrial conflict in the nation's history, when more than 230,000 workers walked out on July 1, 1922. It was also one of the longest strikes lasting more than a year in many places. Communist leader William Z. Foster called the strike "The Greatest Single Defeat Ever Suffered By The Workers Of This Country."
