Item Description
12x18-3/8" single-sided thin paper poster features art by John Buckingham Lowitz, depicting monkey character from his "Gay Gazoozaland" comic strip, who is shown wearing a yellow dress, an obvious nod to his more famous contemporary, The Yellow Kid. And just like the Kid, text appears on the front of the dress, reading "I Live In Gay Gazoozaland - See My Picture In The 8 Funny Pages." A tiny elephant is held between his fingers. Poster notes March 14 date and lower right corner of dress has Lowitz's initials and 1897 date. Lowitz created two jungle animal comic strips in 1896, "Gay Gazoozaland" and "In The Jungle." These joined Lowitz's "The Captain Kiddis Kids" strip and were joined in short order by "Cathode Ray, The Barnyard Club" and "The Never-Was People." Bottom of poster features additional text features of the March 14, 1897 issue of "The Sunday World" newspaper, including "Corbett-Fitzsimmons Fight" boxing notice and "St. Patrick's Day In Hogan's Alley" color cartoon. Poster has center horizontal fold and three vertical fold lines. Poster is free of tears/splits but has a few pieces of tape on back, including 5/8x2.25" piece of stiff paper added. Fine overall. Great cartoon image. Rare.
