Item Description
Leverett Stone Gleason (1898-1971) - founder of Lev Gleason Publications - was the publisher of a number of popular comic books during the 1940s and early 1950s, including "Daredevil Comics, Crime Does Not Pay" and "Boy Comics." Offered here is a 8.5x11" typed letter on full color illustrated "Tip Top Comics" letterhead, its margins featuring portrait images of comic characters appearing in the comic. Of note, this includes Ella Cinders, Tarzan, The Katzenjammer Kids, Granny Yokum from "Li'l Abner" and others. Bottom center features image of "Tip Top Comics" #3 which features a Tarzan cover. Letter is dated May 23, 1938 (one year prior to the foundation of Lev Gleason Publications and is from Gleason himself and is addressed to cartoonist Al Capp, creator of "L'il Abner." Letter notes proposed use of "Li'l Abner" on Associated Syndicate "Dancing Contraption" toy. Gleason notes that he wants to revisit the idea in a month as Associated Syndicate's current product was selling very well and they did not have the resources to fully devote to Abner. Letter has been signed in black ink by Gleason. Folded as mailed. Letter shows just lt. wear and is o/w Exc. A very interesting letter from one comic book legend to another.
