Item Description
First is 1" button by Parisian Nov. Co. Chicago with ad slogan "Eat Checkers Popcorn" as well as "Salute The Flag". Slogan was inspired by 1914 events in Tampico, Mexico when nine American sailors ashore for supplies were arrested. Although released with an apology, U.S. Admiral Henry Mayo demanded the raising of the American flag on Mexican soil and a 21-gun salute. A few days later, Wilson ordered U.S. Navy ships to Tampico Bay. Then word came that a German ship was unloading munitions at Vera Cruz. Wilson ordered the city taken. Mexican snipers caused 17 U.S.  deaths and wounded 61 Americans. These two sailors, both from Philadelphia, were the first two casualties. First is 7/8" real photo with flag ribbon under the collet. Button pictures "Geo. Poinsett"  with slogan "Salute The Flag". He was killed while hoisting the U. S. flag on the landing pier. Cello is toned but not stained. VF. Next reads "Chas. Allen Smith/Killed At Vera Cruz/Mexico". 7/8" with W&H back paper. Mint. Smith was killed attempting to grab the flag when the unit's Color Sergeant was hit. May 12, 1914 the funeral procession went from the New York Battery to the Brooklyn Navy Yard with Wilson in attendance to eulogize those who "Do Their Duty To Serve Mankind". A second massive funeral was held at Independence Hall, Phila. the next day.
