Item Description
22 buttons .75" to 3.5" plus one 5" ribbon 1953 from AFL convention of  Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. Buttons begin with scarce 7/8" issued for July, 1910 NYC garment district strike when 60,000 workers walked out. Louis Brandeis was instrumental in negotiating a settlement which Samuel Gompers called "more than a strike" - it was "an industrial revolution" because it gave the union partnership with the industry owners in determining workers' rights. Next w/Pudlin paper is for "Striking Miners" but has two barely seen cello cracks. Third is scarce Spanish Civil War button honoring German Communist party leader long imprisoned and then executed by Hitler. Next are five Communist issued May Day and pre- WWII peace buttons. Next are two the same (one off center) for Victor Berger/First Socialist Congressman and two the same with small stains for Van Lear, Socialist mayor of Minneapolis. Next for Norman Thomas 1938. Next, one more sepia and one more b/w from 1936 for black fraternal group and showing Moses Dickson, founder and abolitionist, who planned a slave uprising, moved slaves via underground railroad and co-founded Lincoln University. Next at 3.5" is 1968 showing King and Abernathy for Poor People's Campaign (light stain), and last are five from 1976 for Democratic Socialist ticket of Zeidler and Brisben. All Exc. to NM except as noted. Many scarce to rare.
