Item Description
12.5x15.5" oak frame has cardboard mount holding 8x10" photo showing 12 players in uniforms including four-leaf clovers on their chests. Center back row has man in overcoat, likely coach or captain. Foreground shows equipment including crossed bats and large balls. Indoor baseball was invented by George Hancock in 1887 in Chicago. The basic equipment was a mushy soft 17" ball and a stick-like bat. No gloves were worn and bases were only 27' apart. By the winter of 1891-92 there were more than 100 teams organized in amateur leagues. High schools and colleges, boys and girls, loved the sport. Around 1907 players began taking the game outdoors and it eventually evolved into softball. Frame has scattered wear around edges. Fine. Cardboard mount is missing .25" piece at upper left margin edge. VF. Photo has barely noticeable 4" diagonal light pencil streak just to left of center. Displays VF. Nice image, obviously taken in a photo studio. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
