Item Description
Captain Midnight's radio serial debuted Oct. 10, 1938 as a 15 minute program heard five nights a week on 24 mid-west radio stations reaching millions of listeners. This item was preserved in an oversized in-house binder maintained by the Skelly Oil Company's office in Omaha, NE, entitled "Captain Midnight - America's Sensational Radio Adventure - With Complete Merchandising Plans." This binder contained one example of each of the items sent to Skelly gasoline stations from Fall 1938 through Spring 1940 when the "Captain Midnight" radio program sponsorship passed to Ovaltine. This giant mailing brochure (measuring 9-3/8x12" folded) was issued March 1939 to promote the Fall season. Brochure opens to large and impressive 36x48" poster size, printed on both sides. Poster shows the Mysto-Magic Weather Forecasting flight wings badge, the very first premium badge issued for Captain Midnight (see following item). Folded as issued w/some scattered margin wear, including up to 1" splits along fold lines. Fold crease intersections also shows wear w/splits up to .5". Exterior mailing side of brochure (w/o recipient name/address stamp/label) shows moderate glue staining and some paper residue as mounted in binder. Fine overall. Very rare, this is the first example we've offered in our 52 years.
