Item Description
14-1/8x19-7/8" on vellum. Original first printing w/"The Bindweed Press San Francisco" immediately above the right side of the ticket strip. Promotes concerts September 16-17 at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco, CA. Designed by Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley and signed in pencil by Mouse, who has added his iconic running mouse sketch at lower right. Mouse & Kelley utilized a 19th Century illustration by Edward Joseph Sullivan from an Arabian poetry publication "The Rubaiyat Of Omar Khayyam" that they discovered at the San Francisco Public Library. This image is easily the most recognizable of the Family Dog series and has risen to the level of icon in the canon of American popular culture as the definitive image representing the most enduring band of the San Francisco psychedelic scene that spawned the 1960s cultural revolution. Reverse has five tape pulls, at corners and top center, that are undetectable when viewing front. A tiny bend at top right corner and a few scattered very faint pin point dots of toning contained to margins and mentioned for extreme accuracy. Otherwise only light handling. Technically Fine but w/front displaying VF. No pin holes or restoration and retaining superb bold colors this standout example will frame beautifully. Recognized immediately as a dynamic image these were snapped up by the hippy community who subsequently carried them in their life's travels, tacking them up at every stop along the way. This universal adoration has left the population of surviving pieces in mostly ragged condition w/color fading, heavy corner losses and/or extensive restoration being the norm. Striking examples, like this one, are thus extremely scarce and highly coveted. Whether you're attempting to complete the FD set or seeking the very best popular culture artifacts this is a special opportunity to invest in a seminal piece of American art.
