Item Description
3.25x5.5" Papier mâché w/leather bellows. Featuring a three quarters seated portrait of the third President. Moderate loss of gold trim, a .25x1" wide area of loss at bottom center and typical moderate surface crazing. Fine. Retains original insert. We have encountered cases of similar design featuring Martin Van Buren and Daniel Webster making it likely this case was produced c. 1836 but could be as early as c. 1826 and produced as a memorial. Whatever the date of production artifacts relating to Jefferson are notably rare and this case makes for a truly striking display piece. The only example known to us.
