Item Description
10" tall. This is likely the plate example listed as J.19 on p. 116 of Arman's Anglo-American Ceramics where it is listed as "Previously Unrecorded. Unique. Probably Herculaneum." Reverse has an early American seal and below spout is a scene w/two peacocks in foreground. Front transfer features portrait framed w/names of 15 states in a ribbon accented by six pointed stars. Above is text "We Are All Republicans- All Federalists" and below "Thomas Jefferson President Of The United States Of America 1801." Chip on edge of spout, tiny hairline crack in field below American seal, minor toning along handle and light wear along top/bottom edges. We do not detect any restoration under blacklight. Extremely Fine. Manufacturers of these pitchers often mixed names and portraits featuring the same image for Jefferson that they might later use for Madison and so on, but not so here, this image is undoubtedly that of Jefferson and is not found on any other transfer of the era, making it exceptional among its peers. A rare opportunity to obtain an investment grade artifact featuring one of the most important Founding Fathers and American colonial renaissance thinkers. Mike Nichols Collection.
