Item Description
5x7-1/8" original matte photo depicting eleven members of the 1943 Monterrey ball club, lined up across the baseball field with local stadium advertising visible in the background. The 1943 Monterrey would go on to win the Mexican League title, their first since being established four years earlier in 1939. Players are hand numbered in ink at the bottom of each image, with some of the corresponding identifications provided on the back of the photo. The key individual pictured here is future Brooklyn Dodgers' HOF catcher, Roy Campanella (#6 in the photo wearing the jacket). Other players identified are: 1. Daniel Rios (P), 3. Mata Torres (OF), 5. Hector Leal (OF), 7. Samcirena and Heberto Blanco (2B). Campanella would first star for the Baltimore Elite Giants during the late 1930s - early 1940s. Joining the Brooklyn Dodgers MLB ball club in 1948, Roy would go on to post career numbers of .276 with 242 home runs and 856 RBI's and was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1969. Photo exhibits moderate but even corner wear, a small chip missing along the lower right edge and a bit of staining in the upper right-hand corner on front. Back has minor foxing in a few spots. Fine. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
