Item Description
12.25x21-3/8" poster for three-day concert event held June 16-18, 1967 at the Monterey County Fairgrounds in Monterey, CA. Crowd estimates for the festival ranged from 50,000-90,000 people, who congregated in and around the festival grounds to see the first major American appearances by Jimi Hendrix (where he lit his guitar on fire), The Who and Ravi Shankar as well as the first large-scale public performance by Janis Joplin and the introduction of Otis Redding to a large, predominantly white audience. Embodying the theme of California as a counter-culture focal point, this festival is regarded as one of the beginnings of the "Summer of Love" in 1967 and became the template for future music festivals, notably the Woodstock Festival two years later. Poster features stunning reflective foil design that incorporates photo image of Mata Hari-like performer wearing necktie w/Pan character/mascot of the festival. Lower left has .5" crease and poster shows some lt. corner bumps but is o/w a high grade example of this classic poster, which is typically found in rough shape due to the fragile nature of the foil surface. Two small pieces of white paper tape on back at top margin. VF/Exc.
