Item Description
15.25x22" artboard (comprised of two pieces of artboard taped together) features 12 panels of pen and ink original art by "Archie" co-creator Bob Montana. Art is for the June 20, 1965 Sunday page and features Miss Grundy dropping not-so-subtle hints that it's her birthday. She overhears Veronica talking about getting Miss Grundy some of the lavender cake soap that she likes. Miss Grundy only hears part of the conversation and imagines a large birthday cake. Through a series of misunderstandings, Miss Grundy thinks Archie and Betty are also getting her cakes only for her surprise party to leave her confused and a little disappointed. Last panel shows Miss Grundy at diner, angrily shoving single candle into slice of cake asking cook "Have You Got A Match?" Miss Grundy appears in all but two panels while Archie appears in four, Veronica in four, Betty in two and Jughead in three. First panel has "Archie" title paste-over which has moderate staining. Second to last panel has been dated and seventh and eighth panels have McClure Newspaper Syndicate paste-overs. Editorial notations at top margin includes blue pencil date at upper left and lead pencil date at upper right. Some tape staining where two pieces were joined, not offensive. Fifth panel has 1/8x3/8" spot of staining. Fine overall.
