Item Description
12.5x19.5" double mat contains typed letter on "John Edgar Hoover - Director - Federal Bureau of Investigation" letterhead dated April 17, 1941. Letter is to Melvin Purvis (1903-1960), who was an American law enforcement official and FBI agent, noted for leading the manhunts that captured bank robbers such as Baby Face Nelson, John Dillinger and Pretty Boy Floyd. Letter is from after Purvis left the FBI and Hoover is purposefully vague about Purvis visiting Washington and about any help he might receive. This is likely due in part to Hoover's well-known animosity towards Purvis, whom he felt was upstaging him during the 1930s when Purvis and his Chicago field agents were chasing down and capturing or killing Public Enemies like John Dillinger, "Pretty Boy" Floyd and "Baby Face" Nelson. As Purvis became a star in the eyes of the American people, Hoover grew jealous and looked for ways to stymie his career, which lead Purvis to resign from the FBI in 1935. Letter has been signed simply "Edgar" in black ink. Horizontal fold at center as mailed, letter has some scattered handling wear and is VF overall. Letter has been taped to back of mat, which also includes photo print of Hoover. Ready for framing. Comes with Hake's COA and JSA COA.
