Item Description
This extensive archive of a total of 23 pieces (including hand-addressed/signed envelopes) includes a variety of personal correspondence between Superman creators Jerry Siegel (1914-1996) and Joe Shuster (1914-1992) and noted collector and fan Charlie Roberts spanning the 1970s through the 1980s. Lot includes
- Two vintage photographs of Shuster
- Photo showing Roberts w/Siegel and his wife Joanne
- Three personal checks (including one made out to Shuster's brother Frank); dated 1976-1979 w/note for "1942 Original Daily Strip."
- Five signed Christmas cards from Siegel (including one w/sketch of Superman's "S" symbol, one w/Superman and Superboy signatures and another signed by Jerry "Mxyzptlk" Siegel). One card has additional handwritten message. Cards come w/four hand-addressed mailing envelopes (and one typed), three having either "The Siegel Family" of listing names of the family. These three have handwritten return addresses while one it typed and the other has return address label.
- Typed note boldly signed by Siegel in black felt tip pen, thanking Roberts for sending photos and wishing him luck on upcoming "Panel Feature." Note comes w/mailing envelope.
- Postcard from Shuster, thanking Roberts for check for original "Superman" daily strip art. Handwritten message goes on to mention Shuster would be soon leaving for San Diego Comic-Con. Postcard has Jan. 2, 1976 postmark.
- 8.5x14" stiff paper print of "The Superman," the prototype Superman character developed by Siegel and Shuster before the character took of his now iconic look and personality. Shuster has signed "To Charlie & Joan - The First 'Superman' Drawing - Jos Shuster" at bottom margin in black felt tip pen.
- Signed USPS receipt card that has been signed by Shuster (though pen gave out part way through him signing his last name.
- Lot also comes w/sheet of Felix the Cat stationery w/large handwritten "To Charlie & Joan From Superman & Jerry Siegel" note, w/Siegel adding sketch of Superman's "S" shield at right.
All signed/inscribed items date from 1975-1988. Varying degrees of handling wear/aging, conditions vary from Fine to Exc. One Siegel signature and one Shuster signature each come with JSA LOA, but all are guaranteed authentic as this archives stems from a decades long relationship between Superman's creators and Charlie Roberts.
