Item Description
29x34.5" cotton yard goods finished on three sides. Listed in Collins, Threads of History as plate #8 on p.51. This design was produced in England c. 1785 and is titled 'Apotheosis of Franklin.' Depicting Franklin, at top right, below a banner that reads "Where Liberty Dwells There Is My Country." At his side is the Goddess of Liberty who leads him towards a stairway to the "Temple of Fame." At bottom center is Washington, in military uniform, who drives a leopard drawn chariot past the "Liberty Tree" which also displays an upside down and torn "Stamp Act". Washington's passenger is Columbia who carries a placard reading "American Independence 1776." A 12" vertical separation at top right corner and minor fraying along top edge. Fine. An impressive display piece capturing the spirit of early America. Mike Nichols Collection.
