Item Description
8.5x11" vintage high quality matte finish photo depicting the US touring baseball team along the first base line and the Nippon Japanese baseball team assembled along the third base line in front of a maximum capacity stadium crowd. Lower right bears embossed "M. Nishizawa - Matsumoto" photographer's mark. Back of photo includes stamp identifying this photo as having originated from the estate of HOF member George "Highpockets" Kelly. Lower left corner on front has handwritten 1931 date. From the US ball club, there are a total of five Baseball HOF members pictured - Frankie Frisch, Al Simmons, George Kelly, Mickey Cochrane and Rabbit Maranville. Other stars for the US team pictured include - Ralph Shinners, Willie Kam, Larry French and Herb Hunter. Relics such as this one from the 1931 US baseball tour of Japan are exceedingly rare, much more so than the 1934 tour as Babe Ruth was an active participant in the 1934 tour and many more mementos were saved from that exhibition. A different image of the 1931 tour, w/o any Japanese participants pictured, sold for $1,265 back in 2013. Some lt. corner tip wear w/faint 1.25" crease at upper left. VF. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA. If you are a fan of international baseball, this is a must have piece for you.
