Item Description
1.25" graphic red and blue on gold button with W&H back paper issued in early years of WWII by the Baltimore Afro-American, a newspaper founded 1892 by John H. Murphy, Sr. Murphy was born into slavery, served in the Civil War with the United States Colored Troops, and later merged several church publications into a newspaper promoting unity in Baltimore's black community, combating racial discrimination and working for children's education. He became president of the National Negro Press Association in 1913. His son Carl took control in 1922, expanded to other cities and the newspaper achieved national prominence. NM.
