Item Description
E. Simms Campbell (1906-1971) was the first African-American cartoonist published in nationally distributed slick magazines, and was the creator of Esky, the familiar pop-eyed mascot of "Esquire" magazine. Offered here is undated 9-7/8x14-1/8" heavy artboard w/mixed media original art for a cartoon, showing  a hermit-like man addressing an official while pointing to bare-breasted woman who holds infant while three small children gather at her feet. Simms Campbell has signed at lower left of art. Artboard has partial caption written in pencil below art that reads "I Think She's Portogese [sic] Captain" while back of board has full handwritten captain "I Think She's Portogese [sic] Captain - I've Never Been Able To Make Her Understand Anything" in pencil. This caption matches hand-lettered caption text on included period mat. Artboard has heavy glue staining along left and bottom margins as once mounted. Art also has some small tack holes surrounding but not infringing upon art. This does not affect art, which remains clean and could be matted for VF display.
