Item Description
15x20" Whatman Board w/original double-mat has mixed media original art painting of the USS North Carolina (BB-55), the lead ship of the North Carolina class of fast battleships, the first vessel of the type built for the US Navy. The ship was laid down in 1937 and completed in April 1941, while the US was still neutral during World War II. Upon US entry into the war, where she participated in the Guadalcanal, Gilbert and Marshall Islands and Mariana and Palau Islands campaigns. Art shows USS North Carolina at sea, joined by another battleship in the bkg. as they escort an aircraft carrier, whose air group of warplanes fly overhead. This art was published at least twice in 1941, as a print of the ship and as one of the three puzzles in "Our Defenders Puzzles" boxed set. Art has been signed by Hoertz at lower left, Hoertz adding small anchor under his name. Mats show aging and wear w/main mat having some staining along bottom margin. Art has a few minor scattered age spots but is VF overall.
