Item Description
1.25" celluloid button, one of only three known examples, featuring 17 members of the 1902 National League pennant winners, the Pittsburgh Pirates. The original back paper is intact, and identifies the pin as manufactured by "The Whitehead & Hoag Co." of Newark, New Jersey, the leading button and novelty company of the day. Button was produced in honor of the 1902 Pittsburgh Pirates, one of the greatest teams of the era, and pictures Hall of Famers Honus Wagner (back row, 2nd from right), Fred Clarke (middle row, center), and Jack Chesbro (back row, far left). The 1902 Pittsburgh Pirates easily outdistanced the rest of the National League with a 103-36 record for a winning percentage of .741, the second-best ever compiled in the 20th century. The Pirates easily won the National League pennant by 27.5 games over the Brooklyn Dodgers. There was no World Series in 1902 (the World Series was introduced in 1903), so the button refers to the Pirates simply as the "Pennant Winners" and "Champions 1902." Some age stains show largely upper center and upper rim edge, but still with nice gloss and very little surface wear which can be seen only in reflected light. .25" tear on the Whitehead & Hoag back paper. Fine. Paul Muchinsky Collection Book Example.
