Item Description
Only example known to Hake's, 1.25" with Baltimore Badge back paper. Small but crisp details showing 22 players captioned below "Philadelphia American League Base Ball Team ("Athletics") plus last name of each player top to bottom in three rows. Led by one of the great pitching staffs of all-time featuring three National Baseball Hall of Fame members in their starting rotation: Eddie Plank, Chief Bender & Rube Waddell, this 1905 Athletics ball club under HOF manager Connie Mack, would finish the season with a final record of 92-56, finishing in first place in the American League, two games ahead of the Chicago White Sox. Philadelphia would go on to play the New York Giants of the National League in only the second ever World Series as the previous year's event was cancelled following the initial success of the inaugural 1903 Series between Boston (AL) and Pittsburgh (NL). The Giants prevailed and defeated the Athletics in five games to become World Champions for the 1905 season. Button shares the same photo with a very popular postcard which was also produced in 1905 (postcard image available online). A few tiny cello marks under magnification. NM. Paul Muchinsky Collection.
