Item Description
1.75" with back paper of Baltimore button maker Hyatt M'F'G Co. This fascinating button, one of only three known examples, was issued in 1906, marking the 10-year anniversary of the three-time Temple Cup Champion, Baltimore Orioles, who finished in first place in the National League each season from 1894-96. The image used for this beautiful relic was taken by noted Baltimore photographer, John Betz, whose individual portraits of the Orioles ballplayers were used to make the highly desirable 1894 Betz cabinet cards of the Orioles. In addition, an imperial cabinet displaying the identical team image from this pinback sold for $13,200 at auction in 2017 (example shown online). This 1896 Baltimore club finished with an N.L. best record of 90-39, led by future Hall of Fame manager Ned Hanlon (middle row, center), who was an excellent ballplayer in his own right only a decade earlier. The Orioles dynasty was led by five Hall of Famers in their everyday line-up: Willie Keeler (OF - front row, 2nd from right), Hughie Jennings (SS - middle row, 2nd from right), John McGraw (3B - front row, 2nd from left), Joe Kelley (OF - middle row, 3rd from left) and Wilbert Robinson (C - middle row, 3rd from right). Some stain on back paper and small bit next to collet 3-5 o'clock but front cello is stain free with high gloss. VF. Paul Muchinsky Collection.
