Item Description
Only example known to Hake's, large 2.25" has fixed bar pin, concave tin back and back holds pair of 5.5" ribbons. No maker's name. The design includes a pirate stomping on a tiger with mound in the background and flying pennant inscribed "World's Champions". While the artwork on this is a bit amateurish, it is well detailed right down to the skull and crossed swords on the pirate's hat. Amazingly, even though the Pirates would not don the yellow and black uniform colors for a few more decades, this button was produced with those colors along with the ribbons matching the 1909 Pittsburgh uniform colors of red and blue. With their new home ballpark opening midway through the 1909 season to standing room only crowds, the Pittsburgh Pirates stormed through their National League schedule, winning the title with one of the top records of all-time, 110-42 under National Baseball Hall of Fame player/manager Fred Clarke. The offense was led by the great Honus Wagner, arguably the best shortstop in Major League Baseball history. Fellow HOF'er Vic Willis, led the Pirates mound corps with a 22 win season in '09. The Pirates would go on to defeat the American League champion, Detroit Tigers w/Ty Cobb in seven games to take one of the most exciting World Series championships ever played. Surface has numerous widely scattered but tiny raised surface bumps that catch reflected light. Faint tiny tone trace above "S" of Rooters and below "O" of Oct. Rest is clean with nice gloss. VF. Paul Muchinsky Collection.
