Item Description
Scarce 5/8" figural silvered brass mitt holding baseball on 2-1/8" stickpin. Raised lettering reads "June 30, 1909/Pittsburgh". With their new home ballpark opening midway through the 1909 season to standing room only crowds, the Pittsburgh Pirates stormed through their National League schedule, winning the title with one of the top records of all-time, 110-42 under National Baseball Hall of Fame player/manager Fred Clarke. The offense was led by the great Honus Wagner, arguably the best shortstop in Major League Baseball history. Fellow HOF'er Vic Willis, led the Pirates mound corps with a 22 win season in '09. The Pirates would go on to defeat the American League champion, Detroit Tigers w/Ty Cobb in seven games to take one of the most exciting World Series championships ever played. Some loss of the thin silver flashing. VF. Paul Muchinsky Collection.
