12.25x16x1.75" deep cardboard box w/illustrated lid contains America Toy Works set No. 425, © Superman Inc. Smaller of two different Superman paint sets w/different contents by this company in this style box c. 1940. Set has separate wooden artist pallet w/10 paint tablets, 12 wooden dishes w/paint tablets, six crayons, single tin litho water dish and paintbrush. Missing four 8x10" bw Superman pictures to paint/color, small color mixing guide and metal tray for paint mixing. Illustrated die-cut insert features different Superman image; Superman breaking chains was featured on larger set, this set features image of Superman in flight. Lid and insert have had extensive restoration w/color touch-ups (most evident to blue bkg. of lid) and corner/edge reinforcements. Top side panel has repair to 1.75" tear and portion of lower right corner has been replaced. Palette and paints are now adhered in place. VG overall, but still very nice for display as restored. Paints show wear from use and contents exhibit moderate aging. Contents are VG to Fine. All American Toy Works Superman paint sets are rare. Dan Makara Collection.
