Item Description
Scarce 1.25" made like a real photo button but reverse is cardboard filled and covered by a cream sheet of celluloid. Two brass loops join flag bow to celluloid and device is worn using a brass 1.5" stickpin. Text is for special promotion "Rockland Day at Fenway Park Aug. 3, 1915". The 1915 Boston Red Sox, behind a rookie left-handed pitcher named George Herman "Babe" Ruth dominated the American League during the regular season with a record of 101-50 under manager Bill Carrigan. Including Ruth, all five Red Sox starting pitchers won at least 15 games in 1915, while the offense was led by a pair of future National Baseball Hall of Fame outfielders: Tris Speaker and Harry Hooper along with Ruth, during his limited at-bats while on the mound. Boston concluded their superb 1915 season with a World Series victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in five games. Boston owner, Joseph J. Lannin purchased the team in December 1913 along with a group of investors and he took over sole ownership of the club in 1914, the same season that he signed Babe Ruth to his first Major League Baseball contract. In 1917, Lannin sold the Red Sox to Harry Frazee and the rest is history as Frazee would sell the Babe to the New York Yankees in 1920 and the "Curse of the Bambino" began. Barely seen embedded in the cello, as made, is a pinpoint black dot to right of his nose. High gloss and Exc. Paul Muchinsky Collection.
