Item Description
6.5x8.75" sheet of rice paper bears India ink original art of McCay's famous Sauropod, Gertie. Used in production for the 1914 cartoon "Gertie The Dinosaur," art shows Gertie rearing in surprise as Wooly Mammoth walks in front of her. This cartoon is considered to be the first to feature a cartoon character (a character that displays it's own personality). McCay drew each scene by hand on rice paper, including the example offered here. In the 1960s, approximately 400 Gertie drawings were obtained from a business associate of McCay's son. While we have no idea how many Gertie drawings were given away by McCay during his lifetime, we can be fairly certain that there are approximately 400-500 Gertie drawings that survived. Inked centering notations at corners of rice paper w/hand-inked "83" drawing number at lower right. Tiny spot of aging under Gertie's lifted foot and upper right corner of rice paper has thin 1.5" long streak of staining on back which shows through faintly on front. Top corners have small squars of mounting tape on back. Right margin slightly uneven as trimmed, but this does not affect in any way. Art remains VF for display. Any example of original art from "Gertie The Dinosaur" is rare (this being just the second example we've offered in our 53 years, and a far superior example), but an example featuring both Gertie and the Wooly Mammoth is even rarer. A truly wonderful and historic example of animation original art featuring one of the most important characters from the early days of animation. Dan Makara Collection.
