Item Description
Rare and desirable, 1.75", no maker. This historic race for the home-run total ended in September when Mantle suffered an injury, but Maris continued hitting home-runs and hit the record-breaking 61st on October 1, 1961. See the previous item, Maris mate. Mickey Mantle broke into the Major Leagues with the New York Yankees in 1951, taking over in centerfield for a living legend, Joe DiMaggio. "The Mick" would go on to spend his entire 18 year career with New York, finishing his career with a .298 batting average along with 536 homers and 1,509 RBI's. Mantle won three American League MVP awards and finished second in the voting during three other seasons and was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974. Reverse along the collet has .5" line of tan moisture stain but the only thing seen on the front is a tan line 1/8" long on extemely front edge at 7 o'clock. The only other mark is a near microscopic dot rub on extreme edge at 1 o'clock. The button has only the slightest general surface wear in reflected light primarily around the last three letters of his last name. Overall, the button remains an exceptional, wear-free example with unfaded color and high gloss. Because of the tiny visible age mark we will grade as VF. Only a few examples known of each button.
